A Past Indiana FFA State Officer’s View on the Benefits of Indiana Grown

For the last year, I had a unique opportunity that not many individuals my age are able to experience. For 365 days I was honored to serve as the 2014-2015 Indiana FFA State Secretary. There is no better way to spend a year than traveling the great state of Indiana interacting with learners, leaders, and believers of all ages who share the common passion for Indiana Agriculture. Whether it was students who were starting their own farm or global business leaders, Indiana agriculture held a special place in the hearts of these individuals.

As we all know, Indiana embraces a rich heritage in agriculture, and what better way to celebrate this than with the Indiana Grown Initiative. Through my year of service I saw the deepest roots of Indiana Agriculture, felt the joys of a student making a new discovery, and witnessed the devastation as the rains flooded plants out of the fields time and time again. But through it all the farmers, producers, and processors of Indiana were still releasing high-quality, marketable products. The Indiana Grown Initiative embodies the minds and the spirit of Indiana Agriculturalists.

By equipping farmers and producers with an increased network for sales opportunities Indiana Grown is proactively advancing Indiana agriculture. By clarifying designation of which products are justly farmed, produced, and/or processed in Indiana Indiana Grown is enriching Indiana’s economy while developing sustainable communities. And lastly, by helping Hoosier consumers easily identify, find, and buy Indiana products, Indiana Grown is advancing the Hoosier agriculture presence across Indiana.

From the moment I was elected over a year ago, an overwhelming sense of excitement for the Indiana FFA encompassed me for a year. I feel that same empowering excitement once more while witnessing the work of Indiana Grown. Indiana Grown is promoting Hoosier hospitality across our great state. As an Indiana native and past Indiana FFA State Officer, I am honored and excited to be a part of this industry and Indiana Grown.
