Our story….

A chance trip to a small spice store in Savannah, Georgia several years ago changed my life as I began a journey to discover the mysteries and health benefits of unrefined salt, considered as important to our survival as the air we breathe and the water we drink.
Inside the shop, I found a variety of salts displayed. I began asking questions of the owner, then went home and started researching the subject as part of my overall quest to keep my family and myself healthy through an understanding of the food we put into our bodies each day.
That journey continues today as the founder and CEO of s.a.l.t. sisters, a lifestyle company providing hand-crafted, gluten-free, MSG-free, preservative free, non-GMO products across the United States and in Canada. My passion for cooking and creating healthy meals led me to offer a variety of salts, rubs and spices to add zest to meals from your own kitchen. Flavor need not be sacrificed as part of your own health journey.
While s.a.l.t. sisters is all about salts and other products, the letters in the company’s name, coincidentally, match the first letters of my four daughters’ names: Sydney, Alexis, Lauren and Taylor. While none of them work in the business, they did inspire me in this quest for health and happiness.
What I discovered while researching the subject of salt is contrary to the traditional medical message: in fact salt is not a bad word. It is not a question of whether salt is good for you or not, it is a matter of the kind of salt you purchase and consume. If consuming unrefined salt that has not had its healthful minerals removed through processing, it not only improves the flavor of foods but also is good for you. In most cases, hypertension results from use of processed, refined salts so commonly available on grocery store shelves.
One of my resources is David Brownstein, M.D., a graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine. In one of his many books “Salt: Your Way to Health” he writes: “I was taught in medical school that salt=hypertension and that you could lower blood pressure by putting people on a low-salt diet… When I began using unrefined salt as part of a holistic regimen to correct mineral deficits, a funny thing happened. My patients with high blood pressure began improving.”
Brownstein continues that his new look at salt paints it as a “vital substance” chocked full of minerals such as magnesium and potassium, minerals many patients are trying to replace because of deficiencies.
My research has led me to become someone who advocates for my own health and through my business I want to help others do the same.
As a company, we strive to be consciences of our impact on the world. Diligent about recycling, we have created protocol within our production to reduce our waste to a single garbage bag a week. Like many manufactures we produce a significant amount of paper and cardboard waste which is recycled weekly. We also take extra steps for items that are not allowed in mixed recycling, plastic bags are dropped off at our local grocery store and the packing peanuts we receive in shipments are given to a local shipping company to reuse.
In addition to recycling we have found other essential ways to be green. To help eliminate the need for single use plastic and paper products we provide our employees with reusable glasses, plates, silverware, and cloth napkins. Paper towels have been replaced by cotton washcloths, towels, and mop heads. Where permitted we have greatly reduced our use of chemicals replacing traditional cleaners with all natural products.
At s.a.l.t. sisters our awareness around health and sustainability go hand in hand therefore we strive to create products that bring joy and flavor to peoples lives while being conscience of our daily impact on our community and world.
